DESCRIPTION:See details at the bottom of this page. \nTHIS EVENT HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED FOR  SEPTEMBER 16. \nEvent focus: Insects (decomposers) \nJoin the DABB Team and WisCorps members in the The Nature Place’s garden at Myrick Park and explore the wonderful world of DECOMPOSERS! \nListen to a book reading (readings start at 12:45 and will be done every 15 minutes) and then go and find decomposers in the WisCorps garden! There will be members of The Nature Place including Stephanie Hanna\, Environmental Education Manager\, to help you find Worm McWorm and his decomposer friends!  There will also be DABB Team members to help take photos and upload to iNaturalist to become a citizen scientist!  This is a BioBlitz data collection event which encourages everyone with a cell phone or a camera and a computer to become a “citizen scientist.” Using the iNaturalist app or webpage\, we will focus on finding and identifying insect species in the garden. \nAs a bonus\, the first 50 children who attend Bugs in the Garden BioBlitz will receive a free copy of Nick Nichols’ book\, “Worm McWorm & the Decomposers!” \nPresenter: Nick Nichols\, Author of Worm McWorm and the Decomposers along with the DABB Team and members of WisCorps. \nAbout the Presenters:   \nNick Nichols\, Author of Worm McWorm and the Decomposers: “Hello\, my name is Nick and I am a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps\, motivated by a lifetime of public service. Todd will talk about fungal biology\, then we will collect fungi in lower Hixon Forest\, and then discuss our finds. DESCRIPTION:Facebook event page is here. \nPresenter: Barrett Klein\, UW-La Crosse Entomology Professor \nActivity: There will be pulse-pounding displays of some of the most glorious insects on Earth\, and Barrett will discuss examples of ways in which insects have affected our culture and history\, from fashion to food\, music to movies\, and politics to espionage. Weather-permitting\, Barrett will lead an insect walk\, pointing out insects and sharing tales of their natural history along the way. If you join Barrett on his walk\, please bring closed-toed shoes for your safety. \nAbout the presenter: I am a professor of entomology and animal behavior\, investigating sleep in societies of insects in the Pupating Lab at UWL. I studied insects at Cornell University\, the University of Arizona\, and the University of Texas at Austin\, although this academic sequence was split by years of producing natural history exhibits for museums. I worked at Chase Studio (in Missouri)\, and at the American Museum of Natural History (in New York)\, roaming its half-lit halls by night and creating insects\, giant viruses\, and working in both education and exhibition by day. The Nature Place Native Gardens consist of a rain garden\, pollinator garden\, areas extending from the patio on the north\, a native tall grass area to the west of the building\, and a retention basin between the parking lot and the marsh. All the gardens provide habitat for native insects\, birds\, and other wildlife\, with many diverse plants native to the area. Our presenters will give a tour of the gardens and will discuss the  value of native plants and pollinators and explore our role in preserving and restoring our natural environment. Todd will talk about fungal biology\, then we will collect fungi in lower Hixon Forest\, and then discuss our finds. Please also feel free to bring along mushrooms or other fungi for identification and/or discussion. Please bring closed-toed shoes and a mask for your safety.\n  \n\nPresenter Todd Osmundson\, Prof. genetics & fungal biology\, UWL: I am a professor of genetics and fungal biology at UWL. I studied fungi at the University of Montana\, Field Museum of Natural History\, Montana State University\, Columbia University\, the New York Botanical Garden and the University of California – Berkeley\, and have had the opportunity to collect mushroom specimens on four continents\, in habitats ranging from an arctic archipelago to tropical rainforests\, alpine tundra\, Pacific islands\, and the temperate forests in our own backyard. Myrick Park will be an entrance on the right after the neighborhood. \n \nPresenter: Barrett Klein\, UW-La Crosse Entomology Professor \nActivity: There will be pulse-pounding displays of some of the most glorious insects on Earth\, and Barrett will discuss examples of ways in which insects have affected our culture and history\, from fashion to food\, music to movies\, and politics to espionage. Weather-permitting\, Barrett will lead an insect walk\, pointing out insects and sharing tales of their natural history along the way. If you join Barrett on his walk\, please bring closed-toed shoes for your safety. \nAbout the presenter: I am a professor of entomology and animal behavior\, investigating sleep in societies of insects in the Pupating Lab at UWL. I studied insects at Cornell University\, the University of Arizona\, and the University of Texas at Austin\, although this academic sequence was split by years of producing natural history exhibits for museums. I worked at Chase Studio (in Missouri)\, and at the American Museum of Natural History (in New York)\, roaming its half-lit halls by night and creating insects\, giant viruses\, and working in both education and exhibition by day. The Myrick Native Gardens consist of a rain garden\, pollinator garden\, areas extending from the patio on the north\, a native tall grass area to the west of the building\, and a retention basin between the parking lot and the marsh. All the gardens provide habitat for native insects\, birds\, and other wildlife\, with many diverse plants native to the area. Our presenters will give a tour of the gardens and will discuss the  value of native plants and pollinators and explore our role in preserving and restoring our natural environment. I also love exploring\, photographing and learning about the rare and beautiful ecosystems in the Driftless region.  \nBetty Kruck\, Bluff Country Master Gardener & Myrick Native Gardens Coordinator: My name is Betty Kruck and I have been a Master Gardener volunteer at Myrick Native Gardens since the gardens were started around 2012.    My interest in native plants and their relationship to native insects and other wildlife begin about 25 years ago when I lived in the Racine/Kenosha area.  After retirement from teaching my husband and I moved south of Genoa in 2001 where we have sought to develop an environment that attracts a variety of wildlife and pollinators.  The project at Myrick has been an exciting and challenging opportunity to learn more about native plants\, the wildlife they support\, and the relationships and dependence of the life that makes up a healthy ecosystem. \nStephanie Hanna\, WisCorps Environmental Education Manager: Hello! My name is Stephanie Hanna and I have been an educator in an informal nature setting in the La Crosse Area for 21 years. Before that I was a school teacher.  My constant connection to nature ever since I played with and likely ate June bugs in my sandbox at a very young age has helped shape my role as an environmental/nature educator.  I enjoy walking and hiking with Astro\, my precocious poodle\, as well as cycling\, yoga\, reading\, and just being outdoors as much as possible. \nProviding additional assistance: Kaitlyn Davis is the Agriculture Extension Educator for La Crosse county with a primary focus in farm management and secondary in horticulture. Her work in horticulture includes working with La Crosse Area Master Gardeners and teaching community gardening courses. Kaitlyn’s work also includes identifying weeds\, pests\, and assisting with disease management. She has been with the county since January of 2018. DESCRIPTION:Event focus: Ferns & Lichens \nPresenter: Beth Piggush\, Integral Ecology Director for Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration\nActivity: The Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration would like to welcome you to their land on St. Joseph Ridge for their first-ever partnership event with Driftless Area BioBlitz! Join us for an afternoon spent learning about some organisms easily found in springtime–FERNS and LICHENS–as we hike down to a natural freshwater spring! After a short presentation\, we’ll venture out into the woods to find as many different species as we can see\, and catalogue them by taking a picture and posting it to the iNaturalist app. \nThis event will begin by hiking down an unpaved bluff trail and end by hiking back up it. The trail is well-maintained\, but can be steep at times. This intermediate-level hike will be at your own pace. Please be aware of your ability before going on this hike. \nAbout the Presenter:  Hello\, my name is Beth Piggush and I am the Integral Ecology Director for the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration. Part of my role is to manage the 200 acres of ancestral Ho-Chunk land that the Sisters have cared for the last 150 years. The FSPA land on St. Joseph Ridge is private property including woodlands\, prairies\, a natural spring and gardens. On behalf of FSPA we would like to invite you to join us this spring in identifying ferns and lichens through the Driftless Area BioBlitz. Outside of my time with FSPA\, my husband and I are running after our three daughters\, avoiding rain and black flies with family outdoor adventures\, practicing permaculture at our La Crosse home\, and cooking or preserving anything I can grow or forage. \n \nPart of the Spotlight on Nature Event Series\nThe series\, part of the Driftless Area BioBlitz 2022 Nature Challenge\, is your chance to participate in a bioblitz with experts sharing their passion for and knowledge of the driftless region. There will be eight different events\, each focusing on various taxa like fungi\, moss and lichens\, pollinator plants\, birds\, and insects\, including nocturnal and decomposers. \nPlease note: \n\nRegistration required for this event\nRain date for this event is May 8\, 1 pm–3 pm\nWe will be following CDC COVID guidelines\n\nThis FREE event can be attended in-person or virtually on facebook live.

SUMMARY:Earth Fair: Spotlight on Nature Event Series Launch!
DESCRIPTION:Event focus: Insects \nPresenter: Barrett Klein\, Entomology Professor at University of La Crosse \nActivity: There will be pulse-pounding displays of some of the most glorious insects on Earth\, and Barrett will discuss examples of ways in which insects have affected our culture and history\, from fashion to food\, music to movies\, and politics to espionage. Weather-permitting\, Barrett will lead an insect walk\, pointing out insects and sharing tales of their natural history along the way.  If you join Barrett on his walk\, please bring closed-toed shoes for your safety. \nPart of La Crosse Earth Fair: 11:00 am to 5:00 pm \nAbout the presenter: I am a professor of entomology and animal behavior\, investigating sleep in societies of insects in the Pupating Lab at UWL. I studied insects at Cornell University\, the University of Arizona\, and the University of Texas at Austin\, although this academic sequence was split by years of producing natural history exhibits for museums. I worked at Chase Studio (in Missouri)\, and at the American Museum of Natural History (in New York)\, roaming its half-lit halls by night and creating insects\, giant viruses\, and working in both education and exhibition by day.
